How-to

Freelancer, studio or agency — which fits your project

5 min readUpdated September 2026

There is no universally better option — only a better fit for the size, duration and risk of your project. All three are legitimate ways to buy great work, and all three are listed on creativeMRKT: independent creatives, small studios and full-service agencies.

Rules of thumb

  • One clear deliverable and a tight budget — hire a freelancer.
  • Multiple linked deliverables, or work that has to last years — hire a studio.
  • Ongoing campaigns, media buying, many stakeholders or work you need managed end to end — hire an agency. Continuity and senior oversight are what you're paying for, and they're worth it.
  • Not sure? Post a brief and compare responses from freelancers, studios and agencies side by side.

Frequently asked

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?
Usually, on hourly cost. But agencies absorb project management and continuity, which becomes worth paying for once several people and workstreams are involved.
How do I reduce the risk of hiring a freelancer?
Check relevant recent work, agree deliverables and revision rounds in writing, pay in milestones, and confirm you receive source files at the end.

Every creative on creativeMRKT — freelancer, studio or agency — is personally vetted.
